Lady Wolves Notch Victory Over Division II Foe
September 21, 2013
For the first time in more than 20 years the Cheyney University Lady Wolves volleyball team defeated a Division II school. Coach Joan Braid and her charge downed the Lady Bears of Shaw University in three straight (25-9, 25-14 and 25-16). The victory was the Lady Wolves first of the season behind six losses. Shaw, playing without four injured players, fell to 1-7.
"I am very excited for the seniors. They've been working really hard," stated Coach Braid.
In the first set,the Lady Wolves jumped out to a 9-1 lead thanks in part to the servicing prowess of Virshae Campbell. Cheyney won seven straight points on Campbell's serve. Cheyney then extended the lead to 17-4 after Nichel Bryant rattled off five more points on her serve before cruising to victory. In the second set with the score tied at seven, Akia Harris ran off 10 straight points to give the Lady Wolves a lead they would not surrender. The third set was more of the same as Campbell was once again serving with the score tied at three. The sophomore ran off 12 straight points to give Cheyney a 15-4 lead before settling on a 25-16 final score to secure the victory.
Breanna Joseph led the way for CU with six kills on 21 attacks. Harris and Kenneth Wallace added 11 and 10 digs respectively. After the match, the team emptied a Gatorade cooler on Coach Braid. The coach was relieved to see that it was only filled with confetti.
Earlier in the day, Cheyney fell 3-0 to Queens College (25-14, 25-7 and 25-18). Lindsay Ashby led the Lady Wolves with four kills while teammates Kennetha Wallace and Akia Harris recorded 12 and 10 digs respectively.
The Lady Wolves hope to make it two in a row on Wednesday night. Cheyney will play host to Lincoln at 7:00 pm in Cope Hall.
