Cheyney University Students Plant Trees to Help Expand University's Riparian Buffer

Volunteers from Chester Ridley Crum (CRC) Watersheds Association and Cheyney University recently expanded the riparian (streamside) buffer along the East Branch of the Chester Creek which passes through the University’s campus. The goal was to help preserve populations of insects, arthropods, and other small creatures that are found in high quality streams that are in danger.

Dawkins, III, President and CEO of Jo-Dan Enterprises, came to Cheyney University on November 13 to motivate and inspire the Keystone Honors Academy (KHA), a learning community of high achieving students. "Don't let failure define who you are. You're going to be challenged in life," Dawkins told the students. "Accept the challenge. Be professional. Prove yourself!"

Cheyney University Keystone Honors Academy (KHA) seniors Terrell Grayson, Travonya Kenly, John Cooper, Kristan Justice and Raven Smith-Parris are just back from Washington, DC where they participated in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) Leadership Conference. The four day gathering provides leadership skills, as well as career and networking opportunities that often lead to internships and full-time positions to students from 47 publicly-supported HBCUs.

Randy Lewis visited campus November 10 to share his story about an initiative he undertook as Walgreens senior vice president of supply chain and logistics in 2007 when Walgreens opened its 14th distribution center in Anderson, S.C. The Center was the first facility of its kind to employ a significant number of people with disabilities. Lewis' inspiration, he said, came from his autistic son.

Cheyney Among State System Universities to Offer Scheduling Preference to Veterans

As the nation recognizes Veterans’ Day, all 14 universities within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, including Cheyney, are providing another tool to help student-veterans earn their degrees. All State System institutions now will provide veterans with class scheduling preference that will afford them an early opportunity to lock-in their preferred courses.

Cheyney's Richard Coleman to Compete in 9th Annual Black College Quiz Bowl

Richard Coleman is in, what he calls, "the knowledge acquisition phase." The Cheyney University senior is gearing up for the taping of the 9th Annual Black College Quiz Bowl which will take place November 18 - November 23 in Atlanta, Georgia. The Quiz Bowl features HBCU (Historically Black College and University) students from around the country showcasing their knowledge of African American history. Coleman was selected to represent Cheyney at the competition.

Interim President Dr. Frank G. Pogue Takes Over at Cheyney University

Dr. Frank G. Pogue, a proven leader with over 50 years of experience in higher education, is Cheyney University of Pennsylvania’s new Interim President. He took over November 3, allowing Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, who served as Acting President following the retirement in July of Dr. Michelle R. Howard-Vital, to concentrate on her Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs duties.

Randy Lewis, past vice president of Walgreens and author of "No Greatness without Goodness", will give a lecture at Cheyney University on Monday, November 10. Copies of his book will be on sale and he will be available to sing copies following the lecture. Proceeds from book sales will benefit the continuation of the Arts and Lectures Series at Cheyney University.

When Justin Watkins graduates from Cheyney University in May 2015 and turns his tassle from the right to the left side of his cap, he hopes to already have a paying job lined up. The senior Management major from Atlanta, GA came to Wednesday's Career Fair in Marcus Foster Student Union ready to show the nearly 40 employers there that he has the right stuff. "I've been in interviews before," he said. "This was a good job fair."

The event offered one last official gathering of alumni, capping a beautiful fall weekend that was packed with campus tours, a football game, concerts, meetings, entertainment, awards ceremonies and opportunities to reminisce.

The weather was perfect for Cheyney University's 2014 Homecoming Game. Despite a tough loss to Lock Haven University, Cheyney alumni came out strong in support of the Wolves. As far as the eye could see from the hill where tailgating was the big hit, to the vendors that lined University Circle and the Greeks who hung out in tents, on benches, in the parking lots and all throughout campus, there were plenty of people taking 'trips down memory lane'.

After last year's homecoming, the Cheyney University National Alumni Association (CUNAA) came up with the idea to have a CU Alumni Scholarship Fund Reception to kick off Homecoming festivities at the nation's oldest institution of higher learning in 2014. Homecoming Chair Barbara Daniel Cox '66 and her committee got moving and, before long, the wheels were in motion for an event aimed at raising scholarship money to help Cheyney students afford a college education.

This year's theme: Regal Renaissance: A Night in Harlem was an elegant and spectacular affair, highlighting some of the University's student leaders, and kicking off Homecoming Week.

Cheyney University’s Assistant Controller, Nancy Stoltzfus, has a purpose in mind when she runs. After her first run in 1999 in the Harrisburg Marathon, her running partner challenged her to try another run in the new millennium. She did, and since then the running bug has taken her to 78 marathons across the country.

Dr. Frank G. Pogue Named Interim President of Cheyney University

Dr. Frank G. Pogue, who retired in June as president of Grambling State University in Louisiana, was selected by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education to serve as interim president of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. He will assume his new duties on Nov. 3. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Phyllis Dawkins will continue in her dual role as the university’s acting president until then.

Cheyney University geography students were part of a contingent that traveled to the Endless Mountains Region of Pennsylvania on October 8 to participate in the second Dennis Farm Charitable Land Trust Symposium. They are doing real world research that will be used on the Dennis Farm webpage and will be suitable for interactive, smart phone, and even walking tours that may be created for the property’s visitors.

The Philadelphia Chapter of 100 Black Men recently sponsored Cheyney University (CU) faculty and students to attend the 44th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) of the Congressional Black Caucus held in Washington, DC. All students who attended are members of the Cheyney University Collegiate 100 Black Men chapter. The four-day conference featured more than 70 policy sessions, a national town hall, a job and contract procurement fair, and the Phoenix Awards Dinner featuring President Obama.
