Dr. Vital accepts her Woman of Distinction award from the Philadelphia Business Journal
Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital, President of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, was honored Tuesday evening, November 27th as one of Philadelphia Business Journal’s Women of Distinction for 2012. The annual event was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Center City Philadelphia. The award is given to 25 of the region’s most dynamic women in business for professional accomplishments and community involvement.
In accepting the award, Dr. Vital said her greatest inspiration comes from people who succeed after mastering great odds, such as Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, former president of Spelman College and Bennett College. Dr. Vital said she admires Cole’s visionary leadership. Cole “was a woman who worked hard, had character and a love of others.”
"I am very honored to have been selected as a Woman of Distinction,” Dr. Vital said. “This award brings more positive attention to the good works of Cheyney University and the diligence of faculty and staff.”
Vital has been President of the nation’s oldest institution for higher learning for African Americans since 2007. Under her leadership, Cheyney has opened a new state-of-the-art residence hall, developed a University College model to improve retention and progression towards graduation, expanded the community of stakeholders for the University and approved funding to build a new Science Center and Planetarium, currently underway.
