Sue Kilian, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania’s Director of Athletic Compliance and Assistant Athletic Director, received the Division II Excellence Award from the National Association of Athletics Compliance.  Kilian, one of only four people nationally to be recognized this year, is the only Division II recipient.  She was among four directors who were publicly recognized during the NAAC Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida on June 12.

Joining Kilian as honorees were David Batson, Director of Athletics Compliance at Texas A&M University, Frank Kara Leadership Award; Gene Smith, Director of Athletics, The Ohio State University, Organizational Leadership Award; Andrew Donovan, Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance, Marshall University, Rising Star Award.

"This year, our candidate pool was very strong and deep for the 2013 NAAC Awards and on behalf of the Officers and Board, we want  to congratulate this year's winners," stated Awards Committee Chair Jennifer Con, associate commissioner for compliance, Big East Conference. "These individuals have demonstrated an unmatched commitment to the compliance profession, as well as their institutions and were deserving nominees for their respective awards."

Kilian received The Division II Excellence Award , NAAC's most prestigious award for Division II compliance professionals. Recipients display exceptional leadership and unique vision for compliance initiatives, as well as demonstrating a commitment to furthering the compliance profession.

"I'm honored and a little taken back by the honor that I received," Kilian admitted. "I've just been doing my job, not realizing that I was going above and beyond the call of duty We have undergone a lot of changes at the University and I'm proud of what we've accomplished," she said.

Kilian took over as the assistant athletics director, in charge of compliance, at CU in the fall of 2011, while still coaching the university's volleyball team. She has subsequently given up the volleyball responsibilities to take on the compliance role full-time. Over the past year, Kilian put together several powerpoint presentations for educational purposes to be used within the University to educate students, boosters and anyone dealing with athletics on the NCAA bylaws--promoting institutional control so that everyone dealing with athletes knows the responsibilities--from basic eligibility, to recruitment, to showing progress toward their degrees and, ultimately, graduating.

Athletic Director Ruffin Bell nominated Kilian for the NACC honor.  "Sue has worked extremely hard to help improve our compliance efforts at Cheyney University.  This excellence award is definitely well-deserved for her time and effort."

Kilian has created and set standards that Cheyney students strive to reach and are proud to achieve. By challenging them and their work ethic she has shown them success in life skills are what is needed to success beyond the court. Kilian works diligently to correct the past concerns of Cheyney’s compliance, while addressing the current needs of the department based on those past matters, with the hope of keeping Cheyney in line from future infractions.

Kilian, a 1992 graduate of Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales (DeSales University), is currently working on her master's degree in sports management from California University of Pennsylvania. She currently serves the institution as chair of the Athletic Academic Compliance Committee and is a member of the University Curriculum Committee.
