Summer Transportation Institute (STI) for High School Students

Cheyney University will host a Summer Transportation Institute (STI) for high school students in support of the Federal Highway Administration’s vision to develop a diverse, well-qualified workforce for the transportation industry in the 21st century.
The STI program at CU will introduce students to the vast career opportunities in the field of transportation. The program will be an intense 4-week, non-residential program. The students will identify transportation challenges within their neighborhoods and work on developing solutions. Student will be exposed through lectures and visits to organizations and individuals that will provide resource information for this project. The students, under the guidance of full journeymen, will work in teams on the construction of a bridge. Students will build a model bridge by the end of the 4-week program.
Students will attend classes in advanced Math, English and Computer Technology. There will be weekly field trips to reinforce seminars in law, meteorology, green communities, logistics and global influences. SKYPE will be utilized to give students the opportunity to connect with transportation experts in other countries. Field trips will include visits the Goddard Space Center, a Meteorology project at a local college, The Chester County and Philadelphia airports, The Helicopter Museum, The Port Authority, The Market St. Septa/Amtrak station.
Program participants must be high school students with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Lunch and transportation to and from Cheyney University will be provided. The STI program will run Monday thru Friday from 9am-4:00pm from July 25th thru August 19th. Students should apply immediately as space is limited!
Applications will be accepted thru July 18th and will be available at the Charles A. Melton Center, Sankofa Charter School, West Chester Area School District Office and Cheyney University Economic and Workforce Development Center. Students who complete the 4-week program will receive a $500.00 stipend.
Orientation for program participants will be held at the Charles A. Melton Community Center on Monday July 18, 2011 at 6:00pm sharp! A parent or guardian must accompany students to orientation.
