Finalist on NBC's America's Got Talent--David Garibaldi--Speaks at Cheyney University

David Garibaldi, motivational speaker and international performance artist who was a finalist on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, participated in a broadcast event October 21st, 2014 sponsored by Cheyney University's chapter of The National Society of Leadership and Success. The event, entitled Rhythm & Hue, was the second installment of the 2014-2015 multi-speaker broadcast series sponsored by The Society.

Cheyney University's Assistant Controller, Nancy Stoltzfus, Makes Fifty States Marathon Goal

Cheyney University’s Assistant Controller, Nancy Stoltzfus, has a purpose in mind when she runs. After her first run in 1999 in the Harrisburg Marathon, her running partner challenged her to try another run in the new millennium. She did, and since then the running bug has taken her to 78 marathons across the country.

Dr. Frank G. Pogue Named Interim President of Cheyney University

Dr. Frank G. Pogue, who retired in June as president of Grambling State University in Louisiana, was selected by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education to serve as interim president of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. He will assume his new duties on Nov. 3. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Phyllis Dawkins will continue in her dual role as the university’s acting president until then.

Cheyney University Geography Students Visit Historic Dennis Farm

Cheyney University geography students were part of a contingent that traveled to the Endless Mountains Region of Pennsylvania on October 8 to participate in the second Dennis Farm Charitable Land Trust Symposium. They are doing real world research that will be used on the Dennis Farm webpage and will be suitable for interactive, smart phone, and even walking tours that may be created for the property’s visitors.

The Philadelphia Chapter of 100 Black Men recently sponsored Cheyney University (CU) faculty and students to attend the 44th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) of the Congressional Black Caucus held in Washington, DC. All students who attended are members of the Cheyney University Collegiate 100 Black Men chapter. The four-day conference featured more than 70 policy sessions, a national town hall, a job and contract procurement fair, and the Phoenix Awards Dinner featuring President Obama.

Nikki Purvy, owner of two businesses, took time out of her busy schedule to tell Cheyney University students what they need to do to successfully to run their own business. The Founder of Lidyr Creative Marketing Agency, spoke September 17 as part of the University’s 2014 Fall Entrepreneurial Leadership Center (ELC) Lectures Series. “I took the leap from corporate America to become an entrepreneur without any real cushion at all," she said.

Nearly 30 Cheyney University of Pennsylvania students are the latest PECO Scholars, honored at a ceremony and reception on September 15 in the University's new planetarium. In addition, PECO presented Cheyney University with a $30,000 check to be used for new scholarships in 2015.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania will officially dedicate its state-of-the-art Science Center, the first new academic building constructed on its historic campus in 30 years, on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 4 pm. University administrators and trustees will help cut the ribbon, along with PA State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Chancellor Frank T. Brogan, elected officials including State Representative Thaddeus Kirkland, a 1991 Cheyney graduate, and other dignitaries.

The "C" Club, Cheyney University's Booster Club which has tripled in size in the last few months, recently hosted the Fifth Annual Wade Wilson Golf Tournament and Silent Auction at the Penn Oaks Country Club in West Chester, PA. Tournament Chairperson Larry Skinner and Tournament Director Joseph DeVane continued the success posted from previous years with about 100 golfers taking part.

They came from as close as Chester, PA and as far away as California and three international countries. Parents, grandparents, siblings, relatives and friends of incoming Cheyney University freshmen arrived on campus ready to move their loved one in and resolve any last minute issues. Meantime, nearly 20 alumni, led by Gaynelle Turner Lewis ('73) and Benjamin, came together to serve up "A Taste of Philadelphia"

Cheyney University Students Attend 10-Week Research Program at Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg

Two Cheyney University biology students, Vania Louis, a senior from Trenton, NJ, and Comfort Effi, a sophomore from Harrisburg, PA, attended a 10-week research program at Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg that gave them excellent hands-on experience in the laboratory. Both plan to pursue STEM-related careers at a time when minority women, on average, reportedly do not.
