CU Volleyball Team Celebration after Defeating Lincoln

For the first time since 1995, the Cheyney University women's volleyball team will have a multi-win season. The Lady Wolves (2-6) downed arch rival Lincoln 3-2 in a thriller in Cope Hall. Lindsay Ashby and Breanna Joseph paced the Lady Wolves with 15 kills apiece. The duo also teamed up for five solo blocks and three block assists. Kennetha Wallace was credited with 24 assists and Akia Harris led the squad with 26 digs. Cynthia Johnson led Lincoln with 15 kills.
The Cheyney faithful came out in force to cheer on their Lady Wolves and the fans were not disappointed. In the first set, the Lady Wolves fell behind 7-0 before rallying. Once again it was Virshae Campbell's serving prowess that got the Lady Wolves back into the set tying the game at 8. With Cheyney leading 20-17, Campbell once again ran off three points on her serve to put the game out of reach as Cheyney took the first set 25-18.
In the second set, Lincoln (0-7) prevailed 25-19. The Lions were up 12-4 when the Lady Wolves rallied to cut the deficit to 14-13 before Lincoln was able to regroup and the Lady Wolves ran out of time.
In set number three, the Lady Wolves were up 14-12 and ran off five unanswered points. Lincoln was able to cut the lead to 19-15 before the Lady Wolves closed out the set on a 6-1 run.
In the fourth, the Lions led the entire way. Lincoln was leading 19-16 and went on a 6-1 run to close out the set, settling on a 25-17 victory.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Lady Wolves jumped out to a 7-3 lead and extended the lead to 12-6 forcing Lincoln to call their final timeout. After a couple of points and a couple of side outs, the Lady Wolves notched their second win in as many attempts.
I'm just so happy right now," commented Wallace. "It was great having the student body come out and support us."
Earlier this week, the PSAC named the Lady Wolves volleyball team the Player of the Week.
The Lady Wolves will face the rigor of the PSAC West this weekend with matches against Edinboro, Slippery Rock, Gannon and Mercyhurst all on the road. Cheyney will be back in Cope Hall on October 1 as they take on Bowie State in a double header beginning at 6:00 PM.
