Wolves Beat Virginia State in Season Opener

December 3, 2012

Four Wolves tallied double figures as the Wolves won their season opener 74-64 over Virginia State.

Jason Sabb paced the Wolves with 18 points and team mate Rashaad Slappy added 17 points.  Freshman Brandon Norfleet poured in 13 points in his first collegiate start.  Sabb was an impressive 8-14 from the field as the Wolves shot 29-65 as a team.

Slappy scored the first three points of the contest as Cheyney jumped out to a 17-7 lead.  A lay-up by Deshawn Curtis pushed the lead to 15 points with 6:40 to play in the first half.  However, the Trojans battled back cutting the lead to six, 34-28 at intermission.

In the second half the Trojans kept battling and eventually took the lead on two occasions.  It was a Norfleet three-pointer with nine minutes remaining to turn a one point deficit into a two point lead that the Wolves would not surrender.  With three minutes remaining the game was still in doubt, the Wolves were leading by three.  Cheyney went on a 7-0 run to secure the victory.  Norfleet scored five during the run.

Cheyney is back in action next Saturday at Coppin State.
