Yolanda Laney Named Athletic Alumni of the Month

Yolanda Laney is an Assistant City Solicitor in the Office of the City Solicitor for the City of Atlantic City. Ms. Laney has substantial experience in state and local government law, employment law, administrative law and internal investigations. She has also practiced law for Atlantic City in the following areas; bankruptcy, voluntary improvement to property, condemnation, public contracts, police and fire and bail bond forfeitures. Ms. Laney has served as Counsel for the Landlord Tenant Board, Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, and the Purchasing Board for the city of Atlantic City. Ms. Laney currently serves as the Hearing Officer for the city of Atlantic City regarding disciplinary and grievance hearing cases.
Ms. Laney is a 1984 graduate of Cheyney University and a 1990 graduate of Temple University Law School. Ms. Laney was a four time Academic All-American. She graduated with a 3.6 grade point average earning her Magnum Cum Laude Honors. She also maintained a 4.0 average over her final eight semesters. Ms. Laney was a recipient of a post-graduate scholarship from the NCAA and a Commonwealth Scholarship from the state of Pennsylvania.
Ms. Laney clerked in the Superior Court of New Jersey – Criminal Division in 1991 for the Honorable Dennis Braithwaite, Presiding Judge, Honorable Arthur Guerra, Judge and Honorable Robert Neustader, Judge. Ms. Laney also served as a mediator in the Superior Court of New Jersey – Civil Division in Small Claims Division during her 1991 clerkship, where she successfully mediated scores of cases in that forum.
Ms. Laney had a stellar basketball career which began at the age of eight at the WIssahickon Boys and Girls Club in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. Ms. Laney was a member of the girls’ basketball team at Clarence E. Pickett Middle School that won two Middle School Championships in 1975 and 1976. Thereafter, Ms. Laney attended West Philadelphia High School. She won three consecutive Public League Championships beginning in 1978. She was selected All-Public, All-City and All-State as well as being named Player of the Year her junior and senior year. Ms. Laney was also honored as a High School All-American by Gino’s, McDonalds, and Amateur Athletic Union. She continued to hone her craft and enrolled at Cheyney University where she participated in four Sweet 16’s, four Elite 8’s, two Final Fours and one NCAA Women’s National Basketball Championship game. Ms. Laney was also named a Kodak All-American. After college, she played professionally in Spain and Switzerland.
Ms. Laney has dedicated over 30 years of service to the youth of Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware. She has taught fundamental basketball skills to both boys and girls ranging from ages six to 18 years of age at the Mallery Recreation Center Mantua Recreation Center. Ms. Laney has also volunteered as a coach and mentor with the Developmental Basketball League, Philly triple Threat and Gauchos AAU programs.
