Cheyney University 2013 NSTI participants on a field trip to the Chester County Airport
Cheyney University is pleased to announce that it will host the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) for high school students in grades 10, 11, and 12 on its campus in Chester County, Pennsylvania. NSTI will be held July 14 through August 1, 2014 Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participation in the NSTI is free for students who have an interest in learning more about the transportation industry, its various modalities (e.g., highways, aviation, transit and maritime) and myriad of career opportunities.
This educational initiative is a partnership between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Cheyney University. The program vision is to develop a diverse, well-qualified workforce for the transportation industry.
The students will participate in an intensive program focused on the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines. New components this year to NSTI at Cheyney University include the Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy, and ecology and environmental biology as it relates to transportation.
The ACE Academy is being offered in collaboration with the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP). As part of the ACE Academy, students will experience in-depth classroom discussions and presentations by aeronautical professionals in the field of aviation. Field trips to aviation-related facilities will include tours of behind-the-scenes operations not typically accessible to the general public but specifically arranged for ACE Academy participants.
Additional activities include a transportation career fair, student bridge building projects, and several other field trips. A research and design project on sustainable communities will culminate with a field trip to an Amish Community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Those interested in attending the three week program must complete an application by June 27, 2014. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Sharon Cannon, Executive Director of the Economic and Workforce Development Center at Cheyney University at 610-399-2057 or by e-mail, firstname.lastname@example.org.
