Jackson Family Receives 2013 Legacy Award at Cheyney University

Jackson Family members Henrietta Stukes '48; Aaron C. Quarterman '84; Germaine J. Branch '61 and Mary Quarterman '53, accept the 2013 Legacy Family Award on October 20 on behalf of their family.
More than 100 alumni gathered at Cheyney University for the President's Legacy Brunch at Ada Georges Dining Hall on Sunday, October 20. Barbara Daniel Cox '66, served as Mistress of Ceremonies, and Elisha Morris '82, gave the invocation. Paul Turner '62, rendered songs including Great is Thy Faithfulness. He was accompanied by pianist Alfred Pollitt. The morning was brightened by a visit from the newly-crowned Mr. and Miss Cheyney University, Mr. Rashaad Washington and Ms. India Marie Cross, Class of 2015.
Edward Williams ‘63, retired educator, delivered the keynote address. In his speech he challenged attendees to collaborate over breakfast and make suggestions on how they could help the University to continue it's legacy. Feedback from the groups ranged from mentoring students, pledging just 1% of one's annual income to support the University, and establishing scholarships individually, by class or alumni chapter, family or in honor of a loved one.
Williams has been the recipient of several outstanding teacher, principal and leadership awards from the School District of Philadelphia, including the Dr. Rose Linden Baum Award and Dr. Marcus Foster Award. He was the first Cheyney University alumni to hold the high ranking position of Chief Administrative Officer for the School District of Philadelphia-Central Region and was Regional Superintendent for the Central West Region.
Cheyney University President Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital and President of the Cheyney University National Alumni Association Junious R. Stanton '69, recognized the Jackson family with a Legacy Award. The Jackson family boasts nine CU graduates including Henrietta J. Stukes '48, Lyman A. Quarterman '51 (deceased), Mary J. Quarterman '53, Germaine J. Branch '61, Wendell Jackson '69, Marilyn E. Quarterman '79, Laurie Proctor Quarterman '84, Aaron C. Quarterman '86, and Lyman R. Quarterman. Henrietta, Aaron, Germaine and Mary accepted the 2013 Legacy Family Award on behalf of the family.
Paul Turner sang a beautiful rendition of The Lord's Prayer before candles were lit in a short memorial ceremony to recognize the passing of Cheyney University alumni including Trina Adams, '97, Ronald Colston, '61, Phyllis Corbin Lane, '52, Peggy Covington Outing, '70, Thomas Dinkins, '91, Carolyn B. Finney (wife of Professor Finney), Beverley Fletcher Ford, '64, Dr. David Allen Fisby, III, '60, Gregory Griffin, '01, Darrell K. Henderson, '75, Dr. Julia Mae Hines Harris, '62, Michele Hoover, Phyllis L. Lane, '52, John Maloney, '54, Frederick McCray, '64, Jacqueline L. Miles, '69, Sylvester Pace, '76, Johnnie Ponzie,'70, Jean Randolph Holmes, '56, Evelyn Raymond-Thomas, '63, Janet Marie Reaves, Deborah Ryles, '84, Sayeda Shoatz-Quay, '77, Dr. Norville Smith, Professor, Ronald L. Stewart, '60, Leroy Stith, '62, Jean Turner Lewis, '55, Dale Warren, '89, Arthur (AJ) Wells.
The morning was capped off with check presentations on behalf of several alumni organizations including $50,000 from the Cheyney University National Alumni Association, $15,000 from the Class of 1963 in celebration of its 50-year anniversary, and $7,000 from the Gamma Omicron Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. In addition, Yasir N. Roundtree, '10, added $250 to the $1000 scholarship in his name that will benefit education majors.
