Student Activities Director Sharon Thorn hosted a full day of programs on Saturday March 31to commemorate Women's Month. Starting with a Tea Luncheon and ending with an Awards Dinner, several dozen Cheyney women were treated to an enriching event. Miss Cheyney University, Shakeemah Simmons, presided throughout the day.
Dr. Claudia Hearst Curry, founding director of the Women's Center at Community College of Philadelphia, shared inspiring words to help women, young and seasoned, to, in her words, "equip them with tools to empower themselves." Other presenters included Deneyia Barbour, president of Swing Phi Swing, S.F., Leslie R. Fletcher, Director of Volunteer Administration for the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and Karen Jackson Vaughn, Associate Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's Office of Diversity and Inclusion. A moving poem, Happiness Loves Company Too, written and read by Deneyia Barbour, brought the program to a warm conclusion.
As Ms. Thorn presented awards to Student Trustee Latasha Lammont, SGCA member Deanna Derry, and Miss Cheyney University Shakeemah Simmons, she boasted "This group of outstanding young ladies represents the Trifecta of female leaders on campus. I am so proud of you all."
