Cheyney Gospel Choir Kicks Off May Weekend

May 3, 2012

Gospel Choir organizer, Curtis Word, welcomed the audience with open arms at the May Weekend Kick-Off event in Dudley Hall. CU Alumnus Mr. Word stated, "Tonight is our debut concert on Cheyney University's campus.  The Choir has had some ups and downs getting here, but you will enjoy what we have for you tonight."

The program opened with Perfect Praise, a Praise Dance Ministry performed by Karla Hughes, Janina Jones, and Christiana Tieh.

Director Word masterfully led the Choir through a special arrangement of Ride on King Jesus, as well as More Than Anything, by Lamar Campbell, With God I Can, by Larry Trotter, and Revelation 19, by Stephen Hurd.

The Choir performed four works under the direction of Student Director, Douglas Carson, a Cheyney University Junior majoring in Music.  Those included Invitation, by Byron Cage, The Blood Still Works, by Malcolm Williams, Gain The World, by James Hall, and Grateful, by Hezekiah Walker.

Guest musicians from different Philadelphia churches, Charles Smith, Keyboards, Christopher Smith, Bass Guitar, and Edward Fields, Drums, accompanied the singers and kept the music rolling between sets.

Mr. Word was especially proud to acknowledge the support the Choir has received "to keep us going," and ackowledged special guests  including Ms. Sharon Thorn, Prof. Marques Garrett, and pianist Toni Hall.  He also acknowledged alumnus of the gospel choir, Daryl McCoy, C/O ’11, and three graduating seniors, Porsche Pinder, Deanna Derry, and Shiqueta Dixon.
