Keystone Academy Scholar, Peter Hughes, Named Valedictorian Class of 2012

Peter Hughes has been named the Cheyney University Class of 2012 valedictorian.  A member of the Keystone Honors Academy, Peter has worked throughout his tenure at Cheyney University to earn this distinction.  According to Dr. Tara Kent, Dean of the Keystone Honors Academy, "His academic accomplishments are commendable. He has maintained a solid cumulative grade point average of 3.98 and he consistently earned the stature of Dean’s List recognition.  Additionally, for three consecutive years Peter has been recognized at Cheyney University’s Annual Honors and Awards Convocation for earning the President’s Award for Academic Excellence.  This honor is reserved for students who have earned a 4.0 for six semesters."
 

Hughes was also selected for the Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities award. He is the recipient of a full scholarship and was named the Schock Foundation Fellow for the 2011-2012 academic year.  Not only has Hughes shown strength in his academic endeavors, but he shows character in his willingness to share his talents with others.  He takes seriously his role as an honors student, and believes firmly in giving back.  He is a resident assistant and a mentor to students in the residence halls, and has served as a tutor for three different subjects.  He also provides service through the collegiate Greek-letter fraternity, Alpha Psi Alpha. 
 

While at Cheyney University, Peter has twice participated in the national competition of the Honda Campus All Star Challenge, and served as the captain for the 2012 varsity team.  This program is an academic competition that showcases the excellence of HBCU students across the country.  He also appeared on the Ford Black College Quiz show, which aired on WPSG television. 
 

A communications major, he has an interest in pursuing a career in sports-broadcasting, and he has done so at Cheyney University for the basketball and football games for the past four years. Originally from Willingboro, New Jersey, Peter currently resides in Coatesville, Pennsylvania.  He is proud to have the support of his four siblings, and from his mother and father, Steven and Helen Hughes.
