Athletic Department Hosts Kick-Off Dinner

August 27, 2012

Two hundred student-athletes, friends, family and alumni crowded into Ada Georges Dining Hall for inspirational speeches from coaches, student-athletes and Ernie Bono ’70.

The freshman student-athletes talked about why they chose Cheyney while the seniors and coaches previewed the season ahead.  Guest speaker Ernie Bono relayed stories from his life about overcoming obstacles, staying focused and viewing a crisis as an opportunity versus a danger.  “Working hard and having a positive mental attitude are ingredients to success,” commented Bono.

Speaking on behalf of the cheerleaders, Freshman Kirkland Jones indicated that she came to Cheyney because of the hospitality of the campus (students and staff) when she visited as a high school student.  Volleyball player Katherine Brooks added that her campus visit “was unlike any other visit with a welcoming and dedicated staff."

Senior football player Dominic Gould talked about “the opportunity to change the Cheyney culture.”  Three-sport athlete Denise Hill imparted words of wisdom to the audience  "about going beyond your expectations, and taking your Cheyney experience and life lessons with you and letting' them last a lifetime."

Head Cross Country Coach James Williams stated, “you have an opportunity based on what you do here at Cheyney University.  Take what you learn as a student-athlete at Cheyney and use it in the world.” "C" Club President Bobby Hunter and Endzone Club representative Trish Collins also conveyed their thoughts to the students.

The cross country teams are slated to open on Thursday afternoon at Lincoln.  Coach Lockard and the football team will kick-off the season on September 1.  Volleyball travels to Penn State Abington on September 5 to start the season.
