Twelve Students Receive Scholarships from Ducky Birts Foundation

Ten Cheyney University students from the Greater Philadelphia area who are enrolled at Cheyney University were recognized at a reception on Friday, October 5.  Cheyney University President, Dr. Michelle R. Howard-Vital, expressed appreciation to the Ducky Birts Foundation. "Scholarships such as these are critical for our students during this economic downturn."

The reception was planned in conjunction with the presentation of scholarships to the students by  Donald, "Ducky," Birts and David Birts, on behalf of the Ducky Birts Foundation.  

Among those recognized were eight students who have demonstrated financial need and two student athletes within the CU Basketball program. 

The scholarships were awarded to
• Shkera Alston, Sophomore
• Ebony Flecha, Freshman
• Denise Hill, Junior, Political Science major
• Jameel Jefferson, Senior, General Science major
• Desmond King, Junior
• Kenneth Johnson-Artis, Freshman
• Janelle McKelvey, Ms. Cheyney, Senior, General Science   major
• Victoria Oliver-Fountain,
• Jerrod Johnson, Sophomore (Men’s Basketball program)
• Shayna Miller (Women’s Basketball program)

Nancy Jones, Vice President for University Advancement & External Relations and Chair of the Scholarship Committee, announced "On behalf of the Scholarship Committee and Co-Chairs Dr. Tara Kent and Ms. Nancy Stolzfus, we would like to thank the Ducky Birts Foundation for creating this scholarship program.  Your support continues to play a critical role in helping our students achieve their goals of a college education.  We greatly thank you!"
