December 6, 2012

The Cheyney University Concert Choir presented the University community with a wonderful holiday gift at the Winter Choral Concert on Tuesday night. Dr. Sebronette Barnes-Abrom welcomed the audience which included the Choir from nearby Lincoln University, alumni, family members, faculty, staff and community members.

This year marked the introduction of the Cheyney University Chamber Singers, a new subset of the full Concert Choir.   The Chamber singers, Christian Beard, Douglas Carson, Angelique Haynesworth, Bryan Irving, Janina Jones, Shaniqua Love, Chante' Schell, and Ryan Westmoreland.Their lovely voices seemed to come from another place and time. They performed The Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre, A Gift Carol arranged by Lloyd and Debby Pfautsch, and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria arranged by Marques L. A. Garrett.

The Concert Choir includes the Chamber Singers as well as Alisha Alexis, Craig Brown, Donnise Burrell, Hani-Fah Camper, Gemar Fennell, Denzel Jones, Vania Louis, Sha'Tique Martin, Briana McCloud, Elizabeth Mitchell, April Moye, Montel Roberson, Aaron Small, and Lariah Warner. From Alleluia by Randall Thompson which opened the program, to the concluding Hallelujah from Handel's Messiah, the Marian Anderson Music Center Auditorium was filled with wondrous musics.

The program included music by living African-American composers including A Carol for All Children by Adolphus Hailstork, Sanctus by Carlos Simon, and Love the Lord by Robert Grant. Standard repertoire works included Christmas Day by Gustav Holst and Listen to the Lambs by R. Nathaniel Dett. Pianist Toni Hall accompanied the singers.

The evening closed with the audience on their feet as the Hallelujah chorus concluded a wonderful evening.
