Women's Volleyball Team Helps with Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow Community Workshop
March 11, 2013
The Cheyney Women’s Volleyball Team
The Cheyney women’s volleyball team recently participated in a day-long community service workshop working with 6th through 8th grade girls in the Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow program sponsored by the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey.
The theme of the day was ‘Communicate to Elevate.’ During the morning, the team participated side-by-side with the girls, doing zumba, listening to speakers, and doing hands on activities centered on developing character and leadership.
In the afternoon, the Cheyney team acted as facilitators, leading activities focused on strategies to create healthy relationships and gain tools to create peace in their lives and their relationships. The topics included, exploring stereotypes, creating win-win conflict resolution, and clarifying values in peer-pressure situations.
At the end of the day when the organizers asked the young girls what the best part of their day was, one responded “spending time and getting to meet the Cheyney Students,” while another replied “having lunch with Kennetha (Wallace) and learning about being in college.”
When the Cheyney team was asked later what they thought of the day, Vishae Campbell said “It was the best community service project I have ever done.” Nichel Bryant added, “It was great being able to be a role model and set an example while learning new things at the same time.”
