4 X100 Sets New Mark....Garcia Wins Javelin

March 17, 2013

The Cheyney University track teams got their first taste of the outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida on March 16, 2013.

Javier Garcia topped the field in the javelin with a toss of 53.04 meters. That was 2.5 meters longer than his nearest competitor. What even made the feat more remarkable was that Garcia was using a borrowed javelin from one of the other competitors. TSA officials at the Philadelphia Airport refused to allow Garcia’s javelin on the plane. Garcia also placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 14.20 meters.

Darius Reeves finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 14.05 meters.

Kemuel Wright placed eighth in the 100 m in a time of 10.75.

The Women’s 4 X 100 relay team of Jasmine Carter, Shanavia Thomas, Ashley Quattlebaum and Simone Carter set a new school record by completing the loop in 48.68.

Shanavia Thomas took home a sixth place finish in the long jump with an effort of 5.10 meters.

“I’m very pleased with what we did over the weekend,” commented Head Coach James Williams. “The weather up north has been very difficult to train in. This event was a good measuring stick for us.”
