The Cheyney University Athletic Department hosted its Annual Banquet on May 8 at the Penn Oaks Golf Club in West Chester. Two-hundred people including the student-athletes, coaches, administrators and family members packed the ballroom to celebrate the accomplishments of the student-athletes.

“This is the second time in as many years that the Annual Student-Athlete Banquet has been held at Penn Oaks,” said Athletic Director Ruffin Bell. “Last year we surveyed the students and they wanted to take it off campus. Tonight is all about the student athletes.”

The Athlete of the Year Awards went to a pair of track and field standouts. Kemuel Wright is Cheyney’s top sprinter and, this year, broke the indoor school record in the 60 m dash. Shanavia Thomas owns the school record in the long jump, 200 m and is part of the 4 X 100 relay squad that set the new mark this year.

Rookie of the Year honors went to a pair of basketball players. Brandon Norfleet was named PSAC Freshman Basketball Player of the Year.  He won the weekly award three times during the course of the season while averaging 13.6 points per contest. Meanwhile, Kyra Hines-Allen guided the Lady Wolves this season. The Montclair, NJ native averaged 12 points per game and tallied double figures on 15 separate occasions.

The President’s Award is given to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average. This year the recipients were volleyball player Crystal Mann and football player Mychal Evans.
