41 Cheyney Students named PSAC Scholar Athletes

LOCK HAVEN, PA - Forty-one Cheyney University student-athletes earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar Athlete honors for carrying a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher through the 26% of Cheyney Wolves earned the right to be called PSAC scholar-athletes during the 2016-17 seasons. This represents Cheyney's highest percentage of PSAC scholar-athletes since the PSAC started charting academic progress in 1995.

New Cheyney Certificate Program Trains Educators in Dealing with Traumatized Students

Cheyney University @ Center City has a new program for educators. The Trauma Informed Education Studies (TIES) Certificate Program will train educators to effectively address students experiencing trauma. The unique, hybrid program consists of online learning communities and in-class instruction that will be held at Cheyney’s Center City Philadelphia campus beginning July 5 during the university’s Summer II session which runs through August 8.

Cheyney University Gets New Interim President as Dr. Frank G. Pogue Reenters Retirement

Dr. Frank G. Pogue is retiring again, effective today. The Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education has appointed Aaron A. Walton to serve as interim president of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the nation's oldest historically black college.

Cheyney's Samih Taylor Headed to Top Veterinary School in the Nation

Samih Taylor graduated magna cum laude Saturday from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania with not one, but two degrees, a BS in Ecology and a BS in Biology. The highly driven, 22-year-old is headed to the top Veterinary School in the country, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, also known as Penn Vet, a global leader in veterinary medicine education. That has been a dream of hers for a long time.

Former Cheyney University Professor Charles E. Songster, a member of the men's basketball coaching staff at Cheyney for over 20 years, passed away on Thursday, May 11, at the St. Francis House in Yeadon, PA after a long illness.

Despite heavy rains, loss of power earlier in the day, and chilly temperatures, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania's 2017 Commencement went on as planned yesterday under a huge white tent on the university's historic quadrangle. More than 2200 people attended, some watching from inside the student center where the program was live streamed into the auditorium. The 2017 graduating class, led by the Class of 1967, celebrating its 50th anniversary, entered the tent to cheers from family & friends.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania unveiled a symbolic bench on campus May 5 to commemorate the university's “Be Free 2018” initiative that's intended for the campus to adopt a smoke and tobacco free policy by December 2018. Three Cheyney students designed the bench after entering and winning a nationwide contest.

Cheyney University to Host High School Students for Free 3 Week Summer Transportation Institute

Cheyney University will host the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) for high school students in grades 10, 11, and 12 on its campus in Chester County, PA July 16 through August 4, 2017. NSTI students spend three weeks learning more about the transportation industry, its various modalities (e.g., highways, aviation, transit and maritime) and the myriad of career opportunities. All accepted students receive full scholarships covering tuition, room and board. Applications are due 6/12.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf will bring the Keynote Address when Cheyney University’s Class of 2017 receives its long-awaited academic degrees on Saturday, May 13th on the University’s Historic Quadrangle. The 11 am ceremony will take place before an expected crowd of approximately two thousand persons. The Class of 1967, celebrating its 50th anniversary, will lead the graduates in the processional, in true Cheyney tradition.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania has new royalty on its historic campus. Mister and Miss Cheyney 2017-18 were selected at the annual pageant April 23. Trinis Robinson, a sophomore Communication major, and junior Nina-Simone Beaver, a Business Administration major and Keystone Honors Academy Scholar, will serve as ambassadors for the university.

Cheyney University's Inter-Greek Council, the Cheyney DIVAS, and Hospitality faculty hosted a group of 65 high school students Saturday, the last day of their seven-day HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) Tour. The students were accompanied by 12 chaperones from Pittsburgh and York, PA's Iota Phi Foundation of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Students will be recognized for numeorus achievements including Dean’s List distinction, Academic Excellence, the President’s Award, the Provost’s Award, and membership in a number of national honors societies.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania's Varsity Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) team fought a good fight but, in the end, they did not win top prize in the national HCASC Championship in California. After 24 rounds of play beginning Sunday, the scholars from Oakwood University emerged as National Champions of the 2017 Honda Campus All-Star Challenge today.

Cheyney University's Entrepreneurial Leadership Center (ELC) held its Entrepreneurial Expo and first Pitch Competition on April 6 in the Ada Georges Ballroom. Community members, students, faculty and staff gathered to hear speakers, panelists and peruse the resource tables set up with great information for those who are considering owning their own businesses one day. The theme of the event was appropriately "Rise to the Challenge". Students from other east coast universities attended.

Cheyney University’s Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) Varsity Team is in California for the national championship. Cheyney’s team has the opportunity to win the HCASC top prize - a $75,000 institutional grant. Two years ago, Cheyney’s HCASC team came in second in the country, walking away with a $25,000 grant. An Evening with world-renowned Poet/Teacher/Activist Sonia Sanchez will take place on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 pm at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. The lecture is free and open to the public. Tickets are available for a 5:30 pm VIP Reception where appetizers and wine will be provided as guests meet Sanchez and get a picture with her. The fundraising event for Cheyney's prestigious Keystone Honors Academy is $35 for the outside public, $30 for the CU community, & $25 for CU Alumni.
