Title iX

"Perhaps most important, we need to keep saying to anyone out there who has ever been assaulted: you are not alone. We have your back. I’ve got your back."
President Barack Obama, January 22, 2014

Title IX is a federal law that reads:No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied benefit of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Title IX is often best known as “the law that made school sports more equitable for girls and women.”
However, a major form of sex discrimination prohibited by Title IX is sexual harassment, which includes acts of sexual violence such as rape, sexual battery and sexual coercion (using pressure, force, alcohol or other drugs to have sexual contact with someone against his or her will).
Every college campus is required to have a designated Title IX Coordinator under federal law. This person will coordinate the university’s response to its Title IX obligations, oversee complaints, identify problems, be available to campus community members and law enforcement, and handle Title IX concerns. He/she will also identify patterns that may be of concern down the road so that the university may respond or engage in prevention activities appropriately.

The Cheyney University Title IX Coordinator is:

Sheilah D. Vance, Esq. Chief of Staff and Deputy to the President

She can be reached at President’s Office, 1st Floor, Biddle Hall, svance@cheyney.edu or 610-399-2430.
