Welcome to Cheyney University's Parent Update. The purpose of the newsletter is to provide you with information to help you remain connected with your student's experience here at Cheyney. We understand that transitioning to college is not only a challenge for students, but parents as well. At University College we will do our best to answer your questions, let you know what resources are available, and keep you informed of upcoming dates, events, or activities. CU students have a Q&A with "50 Cent" at QVC studios

A group of Cheyney University students visited QVC studios in nearby West Chester, Pennsylvania and had a Q&A session with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. "Our students had an opportunity to ask questions directly to an award winning artist and business mogul" stated Mr. Singh. "How many people can say they have done that?" The trip was organized and coordinated by Ms. Sharon Thorn, Director of Student Activities and provided an opportunity for students to partake in co-curricular activities.

Popular Entrepreneur and TV Show Host Warren Brown to Give Keynote Address at Annual Entrepreneurial Business Plan Competition April 24

Cheyney University’s fourth annual Entrepreneurial Business Plan Awards event is planned for 5 pm on Wednesday, April 24. Author of the book "From the Courtroom to the Kitchen” and host of the TV show “Sugar Rush,” Warren Brown, will give the keynote address at 6 PM in Marian Anderson Music Center.

Campus Invited to Concert Choir Show on April 18

You are cordially invited to the last on-campus concert of the Cheyney University Concert Choir on Thursday, April 18, 2013. The choir has been preparing all semester for this performance and will present some old and new favorites. The concert begins at 7 pm and is free and open to the public.

Who are your friends? Do they support you? Do they keep you motivated? Do they have your best interest at heart? Having good friends will definitely make your time at Cheyney more enjoyable. But being a good friend is more than that. Straight up, friends should make you accountable. They should be able to check you if you’re not doing right, and you should also be able to check them if they are not doing right. You and your friends need to hold each other accountable for success.

On Monday April 22nd 2013 at 7:30 PM Cheyney University's University College presents "Cheyney's Got Talent" at the Marian Anderson Music Center. Funded by a mini-grant from the Morehouse School of Medicine's HBCU Center for Excellence in Behavioral Health, the grant will fund a project called "Using the Creative Arts to Promote Behavioral Health and Community." The program will be coordinated by Student Wellness Specialist Ms. Lorna Best.

As college communities become increasingly aware of the amounts of stress students are experiencing and its negative impact on both their health and academic performance, Cheyney University is offering training for students, faculty and staff. Online training modules and simulations are now available to the entire campus that will assist in identifying and referring students to appropriate support services on campus.

On Monday April 1, 2013 at 6:30 PM the Cheyney University Alumni Chapter of Delaware Leadership Academy in conjunction with the Cheyney University Writing Center presents the Resume Writing Mixer. The event will be taking place in Bailey Hall room 211 on Cheyney University's main campus. This is an excellent opportunity for seniors to make connections with Cheyney University Alumni, get assistance with their Resume, and learn valuable Resume writing tips. All are welcome to attend and don't forget to bring a hard copy of your Resume.

Lambda Pi Eta Communication National Honor Society Inducts Senior Brittney Young

Senior Brittney Young recently became the newest member inducted into Cheyney University's Lambda Pi Eta (LPH) Communication National Honor Society--Omega Pi Chapter in a Spring 2013 Induction Ceremony. The 3rd annual induction was held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 6 pm in Duckrey Social Sciences Building Commuters Lounge. Brittney's parents and several relatives were on hand to witness the communications major take her pledge, light her candle and sign the honorary book.

Cheyney University will celebrate academic excellence at the Annual Honors and Awards Convocation on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 6:00 PM in the Marian Anderson Auditorium. The entire campus community and public are invited to attend the event and the reception afterwards. The Cheyney University Honors and Awards Convocation is an annual event designated to celebrate the accomplishments and ongoing academic excellence of Cheyney University students and faculty.

So what are you going to do when you graduate? While some of you are going directly to Grad School, the vast majority will be starting out in the job market. While a degree is nice, it’s not everything. While having good grades are nice, it is not everything. While having experience is nice, it’s not everything. So what are employers looking for? Employers are looking for the total package. That’s right, most employers want it all. Do you have a degree; check. Do you have good grades; check (sort of; crosses fingers). Do you have experience; um okay I did work at a summer camp one year. And there was that one time when I helped out my cousin at his shop.

University College Student Wellness staff coordinator Lorna Best has planned a series of Behavioral Health Workshops for the Spring 2013 semester. The programs begin at 6 pm and will be held in February, March and April in the UPS Conference Room of the new Residence Hall. The series, Using the Creative Arts for Empowerment, Enrichment and Excellence, is planned to inspire and help students have successful academic and social experiences while at Cheyney University.

It's through Financial Aid of course. So why wait so long to get your information in? You know what you need to do don’t you?
