Cheyney Professor Presents at International Conference

Dr. Steven Hughes, Professor/Director of Aquaculture at Cheyney University, was invited to speak on the use of aquaculture and aquaponics as educational tools in the classroom at the 11th International Conference on Recirculating Aquaculture. Held in Roanoke, VA August 19-21, 2016, the Conference included presenters from throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Cheyney's Anitra Jackson Named Pennsylvania's Only White House HBCU Initiative 2016 All-Star

Anitra Jackson, Miss Cheyney University 2016, is the only Pennsylvania college student selected to serve as an ambassador for the White House Initiative on HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) as a 2016 HBCU All-Star Student. Jackson and 72 other students beat out hundreds of other students across the nation, Ghana, Nigeria, and the Virgin Islands for the prestigious honor.

Cheyney Professor's Design and Student/Faculty Work Featured in Harrisburg Outdoor Exhibit

Thirty dinosaurs, sponsored by various businesses and groups, are on display in Harrisburg, PA this summer—all works of art in an outdoor sculpture exhibit entitled Dino-Mite Harrisburg. One of them, designed by Professor Marietta Dantonio Madsen, Chair of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania’s Fine Arts Department, is located along the Susquehanna River on Front Street, between Pine and Locust Streets. Cheyney students and faculty helped paint the 8' x 6' sculpture dubbed 'Gradu Saurus'.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney recently unveiled designs for a 12-foot statue to honor one of the city’s most influential African-Americans. Octavius Catto was a Renaissance man, dubbed “the Martin Luther King Jr. of the 19th century.” He graduated as valedictorian in 1858 from the Institute for Colored Youth, which is known today as Cheyney University.

Cheyney C Club to Host 7th Annual Wade Wilson Golf Tournament on August 22

The Cheyney University C Club is hosting the 7th annual Wade Wilson Golf Tournament on Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Penn Oaks Country Club in West Chester, PA. Proceeds from the event go to scholarships for student-athletes, cheerleaders and band members at Cheyney University.

Cheyney University’s Hotel, Restaurant, & Tourism Management (HRTM) program will present the Hyatt High School Summer Bridge Program on its campus from July 31 to August 5, 2016. The free six-day residential program for sophomores, juniors and seniors with at least a 2.5 GPA will introduce participants to the five major sectors of the modern hospitality industry - hotels & lodging, food & beverage, travel & tourism, recreation & leisure, and meetings & events.

On Wednesday, April 20, 2016, Students Organized Against (SOAP) and the students from Dr. Green’s Sociology of Poverty class presented the 5th “Poverty Day” at Cheyney aimed at educating the campus community about the structural causes of and possible solutions for poverty in the U.S. The theme this year was “K[NO]W Poverty.”

Cheyney University is pleased to announce that it will host the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) for high school students in grades 10, 11, and 12 on its campus in Chester County, Pennsylvania. NSTI dates at Cheyney University are July 11 through August 5, 2016. The program is free for students interested in the transportation industry.

Russell Runer-Up in High Jump at Millersville Metrics

Student Registration Now Open for OFC Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program

OFC is excited to announce that student applications are now being accepted for participation in the revamped OFC Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program. Students with coding expertise are encouraged to apply for the Hackathon which runs from May 25-28 in Atlanta, GA. Students with some (small or large) level of proficiency with coding are encouraged to apply for the Innovation Boot Camp. The programs are free for selected participants.

"Resilient Lives" Display Brings African American History To Light at Cheyney University

"Resilient Lives", a small, temporary, new display in the Cheyney University Leslie Pinckney Hill, has a two-fold purpose: It provides some new, but largely unknown, inspiring history and it provides an example of how Cheyney educated-citizens are also ‘making history’ -- in this case by helping bring forth a more complete and truthful narrative about America’s beginnings. The display is open to the public during library hours.
